Coretta corrects Martin, reminding him she knows he likes to have this perfect family image, so she smiles and acts as though they have this perfect life. He questioned what’s wrong with her life when she doesn’t work but she has all she needs and they are blessed with healthy wonder children. What more could she want? Coretta would just love to have her husband sleeping in her bed sometimes. Martin reminds her they knew it wasn’t going to be easy. He is out there risking his life day in and day out. “I bet you were,” Coretta sarcastically remarks. The deal wasn’t for him to be going all the time either, Coretta reminds Martin.

Coretta prayed and cried and pleaded to God that this day would never come, but Coretta needs to ask the ultimate question. They stand in silence, looking at each other. The phone rings. Coretta angrily answers it with a short conversation, and it sounds like some bad news. Martin asks who was on the phone. Coretta relays to Martin it was Ralph on the phone and that Medgar Evers has just been shot and killed.
